In 1922 a 65-year-old Virginia woman sat down to write at her desk as the fading light of evening trickled through her window. She was overtaken by the desire to record some of her impactful childhood memories, growing up during and in the wake of the American Civil War. Having never been

married and bearing no children, she addressed this document to her nieces and nephews. One hundred years later, Andrew Carter Curtis discovered her “tablets” which had been handed down in his wife’s

family. This book is nothing short of pure history preserved through a woman’s seemingly simple recollections of a nearly forgotten time.
